Cover franked with 1/2d and 2/d King George VI definitives of Great Britain, tied by Walton / Liverpool machine cancel (24 Oct), to the Hotel Rabaul, Rabaul, British New Guinea, “Australia” at lower left, handstamped in red “NOT TRANSMITTED / SERVICE SUSPENDED”, censor seal along left upon arrival in Australia, a scarce and fine.
Japanese air raids on Rabaul began in December, 1941, with the invasion force quickly overwhelming the much smaller Australian garrison the following month.
